Romantic Day Trips from St. Maarten: Anguilla, St. Barts & Saba
August 16, 2025One Perfect Day in Paradise: Our Cruise Stopover in St. Maarten
We had exactly 7 hours. Not a minute more.
That’s the thing about cruise stops — you get a taste, but only if you plan it right. St. Maarten was one of our ports on a southern Caribbean itinerary, and we were determined to make every hour count.
Here’s how we turned one short day into a highlight of our entire trip — plus tips and easy-to-book tours so you can do the same.
8:00 AM – Disembark & Head to Philipsburg
We docked at the cruise terminal in Philipsburg and were off the ship by 8:00 AM sharp. If you’re visiting via cruise, this is where you’ll start — with taxis, shops, and tour pickup points just a short walk away.
Tip: Pre-book a tour that offers port pickup so you don’t waste time negotiating.

We opted to begin with a guided walking food tour through downtown Philipsburg — learning about the island’s history, colorful architecture, and picking up some local souvenirs along the way at Guavaberry Emporium.

10:00 AM – Hit the Highlights with a Guided Island Tour
Next up: we joined a half-day Island Sightseeing Tour, which gave us a chance to see the best of both the Dutch and French sides — all without stressing about transport or timing.
Stops included:
- Maho Beach (watching the planes fly right overhead!)
- Mullet Bay (a quick beach stop)
- Scenic overlooks on the French side
- Marigot Market for snacks and photos

Our guide was amazing — sharing stories about the island’s dual identity, hurricane recovery, and the best places to eat and relax. The A/C didn’t hurt either.

1:00 PM – Lunch on the Boardwalk & a Beach Break
Back in Philipsburg by early afternoon, we walked over to the Boardwalk and grabbed lunch with an ocean view. The grilled fish and frozen drinks hit the spot.
Then — time to relax. Great Bay Beach is right behind the restaurants, with lounge chairs and umbrellas available to rent. We kicked off our shoes, dipped in the warm water, and savored that this was winter somewhere else.
Pro Tip: You can rent loungers with Wi-Fi and bar service — ask for a combo deal with lunch included.

2:30 PM – Optional Add-On: Adventure or Shopping
If you’re still up for more before heading back to the ship, you’ve got options:
Option A: Water Adventure
Hop on a quick snorkel or boat tour if you booked in advance. Some charters offer 2-hour speedboat excursions from Simpson Bay that get you back in time.

Option B: Duty-Free Shopping in St Maarten
Walk Main Street in Philipsburg for jewelry, perfumes, or electronics. St. Maarten is a duty-free haven — and prices really are better than at sea.

3:30 PM – Return to Port (with Time to Spare)
We gave ourselves at least an hour to return to the port, snap some final pics, and board the ship without rushing. Most tours will drop you off with plenty of time — just double-check when booking.

Why This One Day in St. Maarten Felt Like a Full Vacation
Even with just a few hours, we snorkeled, saw jets land, explored two cultures, lounged on the beach, and ate local Caribbean food — not bad for a port stop.
And it didn’t feel rushed. The key? Booking a mix of guided tours and free time in advance. We skipped the stress, avoided the tourist traps, and actually enjoyed ourselves.
If you’re cruising into St. Maarten soon, trust me — don’t stay on the ship. The best of the Caribbean is waiting just beyond the port.
